NAVAL FUNERAL TO-MORROW,
Leading Signaller Irwin James Chamberlain, aged 21, was killed at Fremantle lost night as the result of an explosion on the district naval officer's launch. The signaller was alone on duty on the boat, which was moored at Victoria Quay, when an explosion, the cause of which has not yet been definitely ascertained, was
heard. Chamberlain was hurled into the water, and when his body was recovered it was found that the head, face, and hands had been badly burned. This morning an inquest was opened before Mr. Dowley, R.M., and adjourned to the 24th inst. To-morrow the remains of the unfortunate young signaller will be interred at the Fremantle cemetery,There will be a voluntary parade of.members of the K.A.N.R., orders as to which are advertised.

CUNNINGHAM, Ernest Semple
Midshipman HM Submarine K17 RAN Born 07 November 1899 at Bega, NSW of Bega, NSW. Son of William CUNNINGHAM Cunningham entered the Naval College at Jervis Bay in 1913 and graduated in 1916. Promoted to the rank of midshipman in January 1917, he was appointed to HMS Glorious for sea training. Midshipman Cunningham won the Grand Fleet boxing championship for his weight the same year. In early 1918 he was transferred to HM Submarine K17 for submarine training. On 31 January 1918, Midshipman Cunningham was lost, aged 19, along with 44 other officers and men when the K17 was rammed by the light cruiser HMS Fearless in the North Sea. Aged 28 years.
