Robert William Bell, seaman, killed on the HMAS Sydney. Robert Bell was the eldest son of the late Mr. Robert Bell and Mrs. Mary Bell, of Waverley Street, Richmond.
He was aged 25 years.
He joined the Australian Navy three years ago, and served on board the destroyer Yarra. He was transferred to the Sydney at Christmas. He was a popular young fellow and the news of his death came as a great shock to his widowed mother, who had been looking forward eagerly to his return.
Bell is the third native of Richmond to have met his death while serving with the Australian Naval Forces since the outbreak of the war.

Mr John Arthur Butcher, who was severely wounded on HMAS Sydney, is a Semaphore man, and will attain his 20th year next month. He was born at Birkenhead, and is a son of Captain Butcher, who now resides in Waters Street, Exeter. He joined the navy two years ago last July, and his advancement has been rapid. With Mr. Eric Norman, son of Dr. W Norman of Aldgate, he went to England in the Drake, and returned in the Sydney. He has been on that boat ever since. He last visited him home in February. For three months prior to the ship's recent arrival in Sydney, the crew had not been ashore for three months. From early boyhood Mr. Butcher displayed a pronounced liking for the sea. He is a powerful swimmer. His father is at present in charge of the Echunga, and was previously master of the Lameroo, Nardoo and Indianapolis. Mr. William Butcher, another son is in charge of a trading boat at the Solomon Islands.

Service No 2401 First Class Stoker HMAS Sydney Born Perth, WA Son of Edward H LEANING Of Bayswater, WA Died 15 April 1917 Buried Perth Karrakatta General Cemetery CE BC 133 First-Class Stoker Frederick Leaning, of the crew of H-M.A.S Sydney, passed away on the 15th inst., after a long illness, in his 24th year. The deceased, who was a son of Mr. Edward H. Leaning, stationmaster, of Bayswater, was born at Perth, and received his education at Cottesloe. Five years ago he joined the Australian navy, his first ship being H.M.A.S. Encounter, Four months later he, amongst others, proceeded to England to bring the Sydney out to Australia. He was on the Sydney when she fought the German raider Emden at Cocos, and was also at the taking of Rabaul, in German New Guinea. His ship was then sent on patrol work in the West Indies. On account of a general nervous breakdown, Stoker Leaning was sent to hospital in England, where he remained for ten months. The last six months he spent in this State. He is in his 21st year, and went to England on the Drake, returning to Australia with the Sydney. He has been aboard that boat ever since. Mr. Norman was educated at the Christian Brothers' College, and lived for several years at his father's home in Goolwa. From the out-break of war until Sunday week last the Sydney, according to a letter written to South Australia by one of her crew, has covered distances aggregating 20,000 miles. The deceased was born at Peterhead in 1900. He lived with his family at Millicent for 15 months, and then joined the Tingira. In November, 1915. He left for London, and then joined a battle cruiser. He was a grand-son of the late Rev. J. G. Wright, a
pioneer Methodist minister.
