Temporary Surgeon Lieutenant HMAS Cerebus HMAS Brisbane HMAS Platypus Born 31 January 1895 in Alice Springs, NT Son of F J GILLEN and Amelia nee BESLEY Joined the Royal Australian Navy on 20 November 1917 as a temporary surgeon lieutenant in the Permanent Naval Forces serving in HMAS Cerebus until March 1918 then the cruiser HMAS Brisbane and later in the Submarine Depot ship HMAS Platypus from 1918 to 1920. VENABLES, George Clarence
Service no 2228 Leading Seaman HMAS Brisbane Enlisted Melbourne 30 September 1912. Service – High Seas. Posted to HMAS Pioneer 3 August 1914. During this time Pioneer captured the German merchant ships Neumunster and Thuringen off the coast of Western Australia and with HMAS Challenger, destroyed the German cruiser Konigsberg in the Rufigi River, East Africa. Transferred to HMAS Brisbane 7 November 1916. Discharged on 29 October 1919. Age 23. Born at Buln Buln. Son of Arthur and Julia Venables, Buln Buln.
