SMITH, Albert Joseph
Service no 2897 Able Seaman HMAS Australia Enlisted Melbourne 22 April 1913. Posted HMAS Australia 30 January 1914. Service – German Territories in South Pacific, South Atlantic, North Sea. The Australia captured and sank the German supply ship Eleonore Woerman north of the Falkland Islands on 6 January 1915, after firing a 30cm shell across the enemy ship's bows to stop her. She was then scuttled by a boarding party. On 19 August 1916 the Australia narrowly avoided torpedoes off Terschelling in the North Sea. Albert later recalled: We had the German Fleet bottled up, but their submarines had England almost in a state of siege. We saw the effect at sea and knew that we would be a prize worth fifty of the smaller ships we saw sunk. We zig-zagged non-stop; the men out shovelling snow off our decks - we had snow for months at a time up North - found it hard to keep our feet with our cork-screwing around. Discharged 19 April 1919. Age 19, single. Born at Neerim. On the Australian Natives Association (Warragul), Warragul Shire, Neerim District and Neerim North State School Honour Boards. Awarded the 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal 1914-1918, and Allied Victory Medal. Courtesy of Ron Blair |
