Enlisted Melbourne on 26 January 1914. Posted to HMAS Encounter 19 July 1915, and to HMAS Australia 28 September 1918. Was serving on the Encounter when it landed a garrison and supplies at the cable station at Fanning Island, during the operation it ran aground and sustained damage that required urgent repairs. Discharged on 18 October 1920.
Age 15, and was 5'5¾" with a sallow complexion, hazel eyes and brown hair. Born at Warragul. Son of Mrs. Caroline Gabbe, Queen Street, Warragul. Awarded the 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal 1914-1915, and Allied Victory Medal. On the Warragul State School and Warragul High School Honour Boards. Also in the Warragul High School Roll of Honour Book.
